Governor and Mrs. Hodges in the Executive Mansion Fallout Shelter, 1959

Of all the photographs I have seen in my research, these are the ONLY photographs I have in color. In these two photographs are Governor Luther H. Hodges and his wife Martha, inspecting the interior of the fallout shelter built beneath the Executive Mansion in Raleigh. The shelter was dedicated 22 October 1959 (when I believe these photographs were taken). This shelter was the first in the nation built for a state governor.
