Map of Damages Caused by Hurricanes Hazel, Connie, Diane, and Ione, 1954-55

This map (really three pull out maps I've tried...badly...to piece together) is found in the 1955 North Carolina Long-Range Hurricane Rehabilitation Program report. This project would rehabilitation and rebuilt the North Carolina coast from Wilmington to Currituck, North Carolina. The NCCD, in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the Federal Civil Defense Administration, filled in inlets, cleared streams and rivers, rebuilt dune lines, and the results of this work resulted in new legislation being passed to safeguard the state's coasts. This was done for several reasons, prominent among them to support and foster the development of the coastal tourism industry, and promote the development of the economy and future industrial development in Eastern North Carolina. Most people would never in a million years think Civil Defense had anything to do with economic development in North Carolina, but through projects such as the North Carolina Committee on Hurricane Rehabilitation, it most certainly did.
